The hype train for Assassin’s Creed III chugged along at PAX. As usual, Ubisoft’s booth was one of the highlights of the weekend. They brought back their giant setup from PAX East earlier this year and just like then, it was packed the entire convention. While the outside was more of the same, what we were shown on the inside was new and did not disappoint. Hit the jump for details.
The Assassin’s Creed 3 booth at PAX East introduced us to the newest assassin, Connor, and some of the new environments that he had to contend with. The dynamic weather, the huge scale of battles, fighting off wild animals, and parkouring through the wild were all highlighted in the demo. This time around, Ubisoft took us back to the city and showed off a few new features. The footage opened up in Boston and it could not have looked any more different than the Italian cities we’re all used to.
The most impressive addition is the new system where if Connor is trying to escape from pursuing redcoats he can run through buildings with some sweet animations that break line of sight much quicker than the old run as fast as you can then hide in a haypile technique from previous games. Another new feature allows you to blend into a group of as little as 2 people which gives the game a much more realistic feel. The demo showed Connor sidling up to two guys talking about some fish and blending in seemlessly. Side missions are also more streamlined into the game. In the demo, Connor received a side mission and completed it without ever going into a menu. Assassin teammates return in this game, but with the added ability of wearing disguises, like redcoats for example, to sneak you into secure areas.
With all these additions, Assassin’s Creed 3 is shaping up to be a huge seller. If you love the series, this will be the next masterpiece from Ubisoft. If you’re on the fence, go give this game a try. From what I’ve seen so far, it’s on track to be a major contender for Game of the Year for me. If you hate this series, what are you some kind of Torie redcoat spy?
