I’ll protect Yuna… or die tryin’.

All right, this is big, you guys. Seriously. Did anyone know that Lulu actually had cornrows this entire time?! I mean if she didn’t already look intimidating enough, this is just Overkill (So punny).

In all seriousness, the high-definition remaster of Final Fantasy X is looking fantastic. While there are still no screenshots of Final Fantasy X-2 in HD yet, if the FFX pictures are any indication, they are also bound to be gorgeous. The revamped graphics really do make a significant improvement; they’re really taking advantage of the PlayStation 3 and VITA’s texture capabilities to unveil what couldn’t be rendered as clearly before, such as Lulu’s cornrows. That’s imperative to the plot, you know. Hit the jump to read more about what just what the HD package will bring.

You can't see it, but Lulu is cocking her .9 mm right now.

Silliness aside, there really is a huge difference in the level and character design. Protagonist Tidus’ hair has been trimmed a little to look less like a bad Meg Ryan hairstyle and Wakka looks a little skinnier, but face models have only been improved. While Tidus looks a bit more threatening, it’ll only prove to be more awkward once the game graces you with the “laughing” scene IN HD. You know the one.

As I briefly mentioned, Final Fantasy X-2 has been included in the package. Some people are uncomfortable about the style of Charlie’s Angels meets Sailor Moon that encompassed a lot of X-2, but I thought it was a wonderfully entertaining game anyway. Plus, the dressphere transformations are sure to look absolutely stunning with the new graphical overhaul.

Tidus and Yuna in fabulous HD

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster will also finally bring the International Edition releases of each game to North America for the first time ever. Final Fantasy X International brought small changes to scenes and dialogue, included Dark Aeons, and threw new punishing superbosses into the mix, including Penance. Final Fantasy X-2 International + Last Mission added tweaks to the general gameplay, graphics, and dialogue as well. Also, three new dresspheres, new Garment Grids, and the Creature Create system were added to top it all off. If that’s not enough, you can also recruit and train over 150 non-playable characters as party members in battle, including characters from the first game, such as Tidus, Seymour, Auron, Kimahri, Lulu, Lulu’s cornrows, 50 Cent, Lil Kim, and more. However, it is still unknown if the separate mode Last Mission will be included in this HD remaster. Also, I am a liar; 50 Cent and Lil Kim are not actually characters in this game, unfortunately.

This all appears to be an excellent package for both veterans and newcomers to the series. If there will ever be a time to experience Final Fantasy X and X-2, this is it, and old fans will also find new content to divulge in. There’s a lot to love here, any which way you look at it. Just don’t look at Lulu the wrong way.

Below are the latest screenshots released by Square-Enix. You can look forward to the official trailer for Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster going live on March 25th!

Andres Ruiz is an English major at Florida International University, but that's not nearly as fun as writing for Twinfinite. Some of his favorite series include The Legend of Zelda, Tekken, Katamari, and Bayonetta. When he's not writing about or playing games, he's probably bothering his lazy dog or trying to grow a beard. Just when I thought you were done with the joke, you had to throw in lil kim and 50 cent LOL. And HEY Meg Ryan’s hair – short or long – was cool!

Believe it or not, I got a kick out of FFx-2 International+Last Mission. If it weren’t for memorizing the order of options, items/accesorries, commands, techniques from the english version, I wouldn’t have played through at all. The expansion is OVER WHELMING, to the point I wasn’t able to explore them all. The Psychicha (sp.) dressphere is the best of the new ones and very useful. LAST MISSION however I wasn’t able to play at all, being purely Japanese along with the new mechanics in the game. I doubt we’d be getting that part of the game on this release, seeing how they’d have to round up the three girls (Hedy, Tara, Gwendoline) again for voice sessions. Shame considering the new music and cutscenes to be found.

I’ve written before about how I love FFX, but I love FFX-2 almost as much. I kinda wish they’d left the ending more ambiguous personally, but the battle system was amazing and the open world nature/lightheartedness was a nice compliment to its predecessor.

As I said elsewhere, if they give Lulu a diamond skull as a weapon instead of a cactuar, I’ll buy it AND a PS3 on general principle.

Yeah, I do love Meg Ryan’s hair haha. Anyway, it might not be totally far-fetched for them to simply leave the Japanese voice acting, but translate the rest of Last Mission. It’ll be awkward, but at least North America will get to play it! I’m sure a large portion of fans wouldn’t mind having to read subtitles.

Actually, LAST MISSION and all international content will be included in the remaster.
Dark Aeons, Penance, Coliseum, Last Mission, plus three new dresspheres (which means more voice recording), tweaked sphere grid, extra bonus dungeon for FFX on top of Omega.
Yes, I’ve been on this news since it first broke in 2011.

I’m really hoping they give Hedy a chance to fix some of the timing issues she had while trying to lip synch for FFX. The animators re-lip-synched to the English dialogue for X-2, instead of the actors trying to lip synch, and she’s a gazillion times better when she’s not trying to match Japanese mouth movements.

Hahaha so true about Hedy. Unfortunately, I can’t find any official news on the inclusion of Last Mission, but I’ll definitely update it as soon as I do. Thanks!

Yes, some of us gamer nerds actually noticed this in the old FFX. And it was part of why we loved Ms. I-Will-Thundaga-Your-Ass. (I even drew her cornrows in my lousy fanart, years ago.) Don’t mess with the Lulu. As a woman gamer, she was / is my hero, and I can’t wait for the HD to come out.

Can you quit the racism. I thought her having them showed cornrows dont make you a gun toting big black thug because everyone knows black people with cornrows are super intimidating

This is the reason I demanded my mother stop braiding my hair and started wearing it down like the white girls at school

  • Yakunen

Great article, but the association between cornrows and thugs was slightly offensive. Comments like these are somewhat hurtful and are what make a lot of black people ashamed of their hair. Sure, it’s just a joke, but please be more thoughtful next time.
