Game Mechanic – The History Of Hitpoints

1

Welcome to Game Mechanic, a new game-design based show hosted by me! If you’re like me, you’ve probably wanted to know what goes on under the hood of your favorite games. Look no further, because I’ve collected all of the nitty-gritty details and put them all in one place for your convenience.

Have you ever wondered where that little red bar with the letters “H” and “P” came from? After all, it’s a pretty abstract representation of anything having to do with H’s or P’s. If you’re still confused as to what I’m talking about, I’m referring to the Healthbar, a popular mechanism used in games to quantify the vitality of any given creature. We see it so often that we just take it for granted, hardly ever wondering how or why it got there.

I’m here to shed a little light on the matter. Watch the video above to learn more about where hitpoints came from, where they’ve been so far, and where they might be headed. While you’re at it, be sure to leave a comment letting us know what topic you’d like covered in a future episode!
