Assassin’s Creed is one of gaming’s biggest blockbuster franchises today. The first Assassin’s Creed gave gamers their first taste at beautiful open worlds with exquisitely rendered details and, since the franchise’s annualization in 2009, the series has taken players to unique locations and eras throughout world history. The series seems to stave off the usual franchise fatigue that other’s face due to the variety of settings and characters presented by new time periods. Ubisoft not only uses maps to choose the setting of their next game, but history textbooks as well.
For years, the French Revolution was a setting that fans desperately wanted for Ubisoft to visit. With the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Unity, the possibility that Ubisoft was specifically listening to the wishes of their fans became that much more real. If the fans petitioned enough for a certain location, will Ubisoft grant their wish and make it a (virtual) reality?
Going off of this idea, I wondered where future games in the series could take place. During my research into wikis and fan forums, I remembered the Sanctuary that was present in the villa at Monteriggioni in Assassin’s Creed II. It is here that Ezio’s Uncle Mario shows him the tributes to the greatest assassins in the order’s history. With more research I realized that some of the assassins represented a fantastic setting for a new game. Assassin’s Creed has a fantastic universe with a rich history across varied mediums, not just video games. And so here I delve into the history of the Assassin Order and pick the time periods that would be best for future Assassin’s Creed titles.
