Think of Cater as the ‘normal’ one in your ragtag group of friends. She doesn’t really stand out in terms of her personality (she’s the impulsive one) and kinda just fades into the background when you’re not paying too much attention. Also, she looks like Selphie so maybe that’s why I’m not that big a fan of hers. However, Cater’s one of the most beginner-friendly characters on the roster and she’s a rather decent ranged fighter. Sure, she’s not quite as good as Trey, but she holds her own pretty well in a fight.
Cater’s weapon of choice is a very classy looking Magicite pistol. Unlike King’s revolvers, Cater’s Magicite pistol shoots out bullets that will home in on your locked-on targets. She also plays a lot like a third-person shooter so fans of that genre of videogames will feel right at home with her. The most impressive thing about Cater is her incredible speed. Even when locked on to an enemy, she strafes around the field pretty swiftly, making her an extremely difficult target to hit. Though she doesn’t have very high HP, she more than makes up for it with her agility, allowing her to evade attacks with considerable ease.
One of the first abilities you should purchase for Cater is her Charged Shot. Unlike Trey, you don’t have to hold down the attack button to charge up her bullets. Instead, keeping the gun out and not firing it will automatically charge up her shots. Explosive Shell comes in pretty handy as well; by holding the left stick up and pressing the attack button, Cater can fire off exploding shots to deal extra damage to her foes.
Not unlike Seven’s Elementalash ability, Cater also comes with a similar ability called Elementillery that allows her to fire bullets imbued with various magic types. This makes her a very versatile character as well because she’ll be able to handle physical-resistant monsters such as flans if you don’t have any other magic users present in your squad. To keep her enemies at bay, also consider purchasing the Land Mine skill for her. This allows Cater to set a bomb on the ground and detonate it whenever enemies get too close for comfort, though this isn’t really a priority since Cater’s already so agile. Land Mine works relatively well for bosses though, so don’t write it off completely.
