I haven't been playing many modern RPGs these days other than Deus Ex: Human Revolution; heard bad things about the latest Final Fantasies and even about the much hyped Last Story, which I've already preordered. Oops?

There's definitely a style to those old games defined by not just when we played them, but on the systems they were confined to. Constraints and limits have a wonderful way of breeding memorable quality, but it could've also just been a much different climate for the industry and it's RPG visionaries. I'll never forget how much I loved Breath of Fire III, and I continue to love that game to this day, along with classics like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VII and IX. My most recent favorite RPG is Shadow Hearts, and I've got a mind to grab Unchained Blades for the 3DS. On that note, I've heard the best things about the Persona RPGs.
