[Review] Fantasy Conflict (iOS)
Since my time with Twinfinite, I have played more than my share of tower defense games. From simple flash games to the superb Anomaly Warzone Earth, there appears to be no shortage of what at first seemed to be a dying genre. Thanks to mobile devices, the genre reclaimed its second wind, and with a vengeance. Is Fantasy Conflict –Gaijin Games’s newest offering to the tower defense library– a no-brainer, or is it a game that you’ll struggle with keeping on your iPhone?
Fantasy Conflict is not your standard top-down strategical warfare game. There are troops, an opposing militia, and you. Staying true to the company’s commitment to not doing what everyone else is at the moment, the game is absolutely packed full of content. Underneath the simple, tap-and-hold gameplay are notions of something more. Introduced in the tutorial stages is only the tip of what to expect. There is a fully-implemented magic system that aids you in conquering your rival neighbors’ strongholds by hurling elemental perils at their bases or giving you the advantage by allowing you to see into the enemy’s buildings. Also included is the ability to increase your own buildings into offensive powerhouses with the ability to add a cannon to it, or make it your bomb shelter with an upgrade that fortifies the area around it. With the two combined, you have the tools to develop strategies that can make or break of the stages. Both of these systems are fully upgradable, and very enjoyable as they aid you in your campaign.
The game does a wonderful job of keeping you on your toes, even on the easiest difficulty setting, and this is where it shines. Enemies don’t care if you are planning your next move. Each map starts off by giving you one castle with an increasing number of soldiers. From the moment the game starts, you have only your resources to take over enemy buildings, and completing your main objective. During this time, the baddies will do their best to keep you at bay. Time is also against you as you attempt to complete secondary objectives. This is not a game you can just pick up and fly through. It is truly one where time and effort affects your enjoyment, and I am more than okay with that.
Gaijin Games is mostly known for its award-winning Bit. Trip series of games, and for good reason. The quality, sound, and humor are all there. The same standards have been painstakingly worked into Fantasy Conflict. While the story is not the biggest part of the game, what it does add to the experience is amazing. It feels very much like something you would read in a medieval comic strip. After the completion of each level, you are rewarded in terms of stars, which determine how much gold you earn, which you can then spend towards increasing your troops and upgrades to give you the much needed advantage.
Among the already countless additions to the fantastic gameplay is an endless survival mode, where you strategize your way through an infinite amount of levels until you are conquered over. For those that love achievements, fear not. Through both OpenFeint and in-game, you are able to unlock and collect achievements, which is pratically a game in itself.
What else is there to be said? With just the right amount of both pick-up-and-playability, and time investment, there is really nothing that should stop you from thoroughly enjoying yourself in the world of Fantasy Conflict, unless you have an indescribable hatred of tower defense games. Other than that, you do not have an excuse. For $1.99 and $2.99 for the standard and HD versions respectively, that is the epitome of a steal. Do yourself a favor. Buy this game. Kill dwarves. Laugh out loud. Enjoy it.
