About

Ricky Donaldson is a writer at childhood's end, and actually wants to do the inane, rambling excuse for game journalism that he practices for a living. He also knows how to fix a mean cheese toasty and can fix the head gasket of a 1997 Ford Explorer... he thinks, anyway.

Zoe Quinn’s Follow Up to Depression Quest Is A FMV Game

FMV = Full Motion Video. It was probably the most gloriously awful idea in the history of game development. In a world where we could not render elaborate structures or characters, we simply shoved actors in front of cameras and ordered them to move around in hilariously awkward live action scenes that were degrading for everyone involved and horrible to play. They were, obviously, the best things ever. Fox Hunt is probably one of my favorite bad games of all time, and [...]

Deadlight Goes Free For Xbox Live Gold Members

Yes, I know it is not as extensive, exciting, or useful as the PlayStation Plus system of giving you free games, but damn it, free games are free games. And to that end, I still highly anticipate the news about the next game going up under the Xbox 360 “Games for Gold” promotion. Especially when they give me awesome stuff like Hitman Absolution for free. However, I do not get especially excited when the game coming up is something I’ve [...]

Martin O’Donnell Ousted From Bungie “Without Cause”

This is some shocking news; Martin O’Donnell, longtime in-house composer of Bungie Studios, the creators of Halo and the upcoming Destiny, has been let go from the developer after a 13 year stint. Its not just that he was let go, however; to hear O’Donnell state it, it sounds like he was forced out. Taking to Twitter today to announce the departure, O’Donnell said “I’m saddened to say that Bungie’s board of directors terminated me without cause on April 11, 2014.” [...]

PAX South Announced For San Antonio, Texas In Jan. 2015

Not much to say about this one other than to self aggrandize from the title; after rumors abound a couple of weeks ago about a midwestern or southern PAX, we now have a confirmed location from PAX East. PAX South will take place in San Antonio, Texas (as opposed to the most common suggestion, Austin) on January 23-25 of 2015. When we have more info, we will share it here. UPDATE: Hey, here’s more information! We now know where in [...]

Triple Down – How Multiple Characters Ruined Grand Theft Auto V

[Note: This article spoils the entirety of Grand Theft Auto V.] Rockstar, for all of the grand and intelligent bounds they have leaped in video game storytelling, still wrestles with a problem with their narrative design; scope. Where others worry about reaching too far, Rockstar has zero fear in going beyond their grasp, fully believing in the phrase “shoot for the moon, for even if you miss, you will land among the stars.” The problem, of course, is a matter [...]

New Abilities, Capture Mode Editor Coming To GTA Online

The launch of GTA Online has been met with a practically mute reaction from the majority of gamers, outright disdain from the minority, and basically no love and affection on the whole. Surprising, given the hype surrounding the online mode when it was first detailed last year. A lot of that has to do with the lack of co-op heists, one of the earliest and most exciting mechanics of Online announced, actually coming out. Perhaps, however, the tide is turning; [...]

The Raid 2 Gets Awful Flash Game, Chance To Win An Xbox One

A month ago, I got a fantastic opportunity to go see The Raid 2: Berandal, perhaps the most kickass action film of the last 20 years. Filled with badass martial arts, amazing car chases, and incredible amounts of violence, you should absolutely track it down if you get the chance (it opens in limited release in big U.S. cities on April 11). If you can’t wait, and have a little time to kill and a fondness for flash games, developer [...]

Doom Beta Only On Next-Gen Consoles/PC, Requires XBL Gold

A while back, we learned that the beta for the new Doom game, thus far only known as Doom and not Doom 4, would be coming to Wolfenstein: The New Order as a pre-order incentive. No other details were given, until now. According to an FAQ posted to the Wolfenstein website, the beta for Doom will be coming to next gen consoles and PCs only, leaving the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions in the dust. The FAQ entry also drops [...]

Excavation Of Atari 2600 E.T. Landfill Cleared By New Mexico

One of gaming’s most famous ghost stories may soon have an actual conclusion. The famed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial Atari 2600 landfill could be dug up soon, after being stonewalled by the New Mexico government for months due to environmental concerns. But, late yesterday, the New Mexico legislature gave the go ahead to excavate a proposed digging site just outside Alamogordo, New Mexico. You may have heard of this most recent effort, spearheaded by Lighthouse Interactive and Fuel Industries. Last year, [...]

Neon Alley No Longer Running On Xbox 360 Or PS3

Way back in 2012, Viz Media announced they were developing an anime streaming channel for the PlayStation 3 called “Neon Alley”, which has since expanded to Xbox 360 and Hulu and become free for all to use, before becoming an On-Demand service in February of this year. Now, however, it looks like anime fans will have to join Hulu if they want to keep tuning in, as the Neon Alley app has been dropped from the PlayStation 3 and Xbox [...]
