Aliens: Colonial Marines’ Enemy AI Was Broken Due to One Typo

Critically panned by gamers, fans of the Aliens franchise, and major gaming publications, Aliens: Colonial Marines for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 was an undeniably terrible game. Twinfinite called it a “massive disappointment” way back then. One of the game’s biggest issues is its broken AI, but apparently, this can be easily fixed by correcting a typo in the game’s files.

As echoed on Resetera,  modder jamesdickinson963 was able to fix the game’s terrible AI behavior by simply correcting the typo “teather” to “tether” from the .ini file. This misspelling in the .ini file  significantly hampers the capacity of enemy AI because it prevents important AI parameters from being loaded.

Normally, the xenomorphs in Aliens: Colonial Marines would either rush in blindly to kill you and your squad or would stand idle idly by from time to time. Fixing the typo turns enemies into more compelling foes, making them more reactive to their environment as they now hide behind cover before attacking.

While the AI improvements sound exciting, you shouldn’t immediately hop in Aliens: Colonial Marines or purchase a copy of the game. It’s worth noting that fixing the typo doesn’t fix the enemy AI entirely, but only improves it a bit. There’s also other issues to face, such as its dated graphics, numerous bugs and glitches, linear levels, lackluster FPS gameplay, and much more.
