World Travel and the Games Back Home

Travel is one of my favorite things to do. Given that I don’t exatly make millions, seeking a job where worldwide excursions would be paid for by a much larger, richer party seemed logical enough. But what I’ve never been able to completely suppress, and it is a prime example of a first-world problem, is the longing for the games back home. It is the lamenting of the time away from the games both new and those on the backlog, [...]

Bravely Default Review – Have I Played This Before?

Making something “old-school” is usually a sure fire way to cash in on some nostalgia, but it’s also some water that developers must carefully tread. The video game community says they want the olden days of video games back, but would it be worth it? The years aren’t nice to many games, and what was once exciting and revolutionary may not have the same impact; this was evident with Lost Odyssey, a game that delivered the very traditional Final Fantasy-esque [...]

Bravely Default – Demo Impressions

Square-Enix might market their best-looking RPG experiences on the most powerful hardwares in the market, but Nintendo seems to enjoy reminding everyone that they were, and are, the original home for the traditional RPG experience. Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light and Radiant Historia for the DS, Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii, and now Bravely Default for the 3DS, all of them offer a more traditional RPG experience less beholden to graphics then they are to traditional settings and [...]

Character Design Akihiko Yoshida Leaves Square

Known most recently for his work doing design and promotional art for Bravely Default, longtime artist at Square, Akhiko Yoshida is leaving the company.  Yoshida made the announcement in a Bravely Default artbook released in Japan today. It’s not entirely clear what’s next for Yoshida in the future, but he has confirmed that he will continue his relationship with Square Enix working on the Bravely Default games for the time being. It’s always sad to hear about artists moving from their jobs, especially when [...]

Bravely Default For the Sequel Not Really A Sequel, Still A Silly Name

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is a game with a very silly name. It is however a very cool game, that did very well, and one that will be coming to North America and Europe (albeit with the silly name). While those of us in the Western hemisphere wait for the flying fairy to descend upon us, Japan will be getting an expansion in the form of Bravely Default: For the Sequel. It adds new scenarios, new controls, mechanical tweaks, and [...]

[News] Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Might Be Flying Overseas

From Square-Enix and Silicon Studio, the makers of 3D Dot Game Heroes, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy hit Japanese shelves back in October 2012. For years, fans of the JRPG genre have been anticipating a game on par with old-school Final Fantasy games. There have been a few that have been very well received, such as Ni No Kuni and Lost Odyssey, but those are far and few between. Bravely Default: Flying Fairy actually began production as a sequel to the [...]

[News] New Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Trailer. Weird Name Still Persists.

I still think those thighs will be the best part of the game. With this on the 3DS, Xenoblade and The Last Story for the Wii, and a whole slew of Atlus offerings, 2012 is a strong year for the JRPG. So much so that it has drawn in an anti-RPG man such as myself to keep a keen lookout for any new details on these titles. A new trailer for Square-Enix’s Bravely Default: Flying Fairy has surfaced and though [...]
