Bringing the Pain – Six Ways to Prepare for Dark Souls II on PC

The video gaming world is exploding with today’s release of Dark Souls II. If you’re on Twitter and you don’t want to hear about it, now would be a good time to disable your account or take a break because it’s going to be all over the place for the foreseeable future. I’ve dropped nearly 300 hours into Dark Souls on PC, and every second of it has been incredible. I’m generally not a big ‘day one’ purchaser of video [...]

DayZ Dev Team Adding Talent

Bohemia Interactive, the developer behind the zombie and/or survival game DayZ, is doubling the size of the game’s development team. This comes from Dean Hall in a DayZ update: We are inducting a large number of new people to the team, effectively doubling the whole project… Last week, Hall announced that he is leaving Bohemia Interactive but that he would be ”in a leadership role until at least the end of the year,” and that he would still be invovled with [...]

DayZ: The Chernarus Ranger – Episode 2

Well hoooowdy do, cowboy? DayZ’s Chernarus Ranger is back, and this time it gets ROUGH, pardner. We have some young’uns that like to play rough with a six shooter and a mysterious drifter in a yellow raincoat that don’t wanna say nothin’ to nobody. Enjoy! “Now y’all gonna check out”

DayZ: The Chernarus Ranger – Episode 1

There’s no real endgame yet in DayZ, so for now it’s all about making your own fun. For some reason, for me, that means slapping on a cowboy hat and the best Texan accent my feeble British vocal chords can muster and pretending to be some rootin’ tootin’ neighbourly gunslinger. Some wanderers of Chernarus take it better than others.

DayZ – Becoming A Criminal

It’s the 12th of February and I’m about ready to put my fist through my computer screen. My progress on DayZ has hit another wall through no fault of my own, with the blame lying solely on the game’s current primitive state. I’m stuck in limbo: after dying an embarrassing death breaking my leg on a deserted beach and having to slowly drown myself to put me out of my misery, every time I respawn I’m simply put back moments [...]

Risk Averse – How Gamers Are Becoming The New Publishers

Note: This piece spoils the ending of Braid. Like, immediately. So if you haven’t played it, and you should, go do so. It is now just over five years ago, a game came out that changed the course of gaming: Jonathan Blow’s platformer Braid. Braid was a fundamentally straightforward platformer with a very simple hook; you could control time. Of course, that’s not what made Braid famous; what made it famous was its ending. At Braid’s end, you witness a very serious revelation about your main [...]

DayZ hits $5.1m in Sales in First 24 Hours

This just in, people love the heck out of zombies. Don’t believe me? Well, Bohemia Interactive’s open-world pseudo-MMO DayZ made approximately $5.1 million dollars in sales during its first 24 hours on early access. DayZ creator Dean Hall has been tweeting updates on the game’s success and is clearly excited by it. Hall originally created DayZ as a mod for Arma 2 and later went on to work in conjunction with Bohemia Interactive to make it a separate game entirely. DayZ is currently on sale on Steam [...]

DayZ Standalone Now Available On Steam Early Access

The standalone version of Arma II mod DayZ appeared on Steam Early Access a few months ago, but wasn’t able to be purchased. Today, that changes as the standalone release is officially up for grabs on Early Access. DayZ has been anticipated by gamers for quite some time. The brutal zombie survival game met with its bumps on the road to release, including that whole fiasco with The War Z (later renamed Infestation: Survivor Stories for ‘blatant rip-off’ reasons). If you’re willing to endure [...]

DayZ Early Access on Steam Database

A DayZ Early Access entry appeared on the Steam Database yesterday and it didn’t take very long for people to notice. The entry states that the app is currently “available” but it is not currently purchasable. DayZ creator Dean Hall told Joystiq when asked for clarification ”All I can say is that progress has been very good, we’re a mix of nervous and excited. And as I’d stated on my twitter when I announced my break from social media/updates, we are on the final lap. [...]

[Infinite Themes] The Good Old Emergent Game – My Magical Rookie Season in NHL 2002

Game 1: Edmonton Oilers vs. Vancouver Canucks ‘Mike Eaton’ is a newly created character using NHL 2002 who has my birthday and physical dimensions. I am a 29 year-old rookie in the National Hockey League playing defense for my hometown Edmonton Oilers. My first game has me playing on the third pairing with Igor Ulanov, a hard-nosed conservative defensive player. I want to avoid making mistakes so I play safely too, until late in the third period when we are [...]
