Women in Gaming (Part I) – Making Games

“I just have one question for people who think that women don’t want to work in games: have you asked them?” – Elizabeth Sampat (Storm8 senior game designer), GDC 2014 A panel at the Game Developer’s Conference last month, game designer Elizabeth Sampat offered her personal insight to the misconceptions surrounding women in the gaming industry. Myths that women “don’t want to work in games” and that there are “no female candidates” are in her wise words: “bullshit.” Studies and [...]

Martin O’Donnell Ousted From Bungie “Without Cause”

This is some shocking news; Martin O’Donnell, longtime in-house composer of Bungie Studios, the creators of Halo and the upcoming Destiny, has been let go from the developer after a 13 year stint. Its not just that he was let go, however; to hear O’Donnell state it, it sounds like he was forced out. Taking to Twitter today to announce the departure, O’Donnell said “I’m saddened to say that Bungie’s board of directors terminated me without cause on April 11, 2014.” [...]

“We’ll Fix it in the Patch” – Imagining 11 Early Access Games From Years Past

One issue that has been steadily growing for gaming websites large and small over the past year or so is Early Access titles on Steam. Specifically, how can we review a game that on one hand is self-described as unfinished, yet which developers are still charging full price for? It is a real conundrum, and it’s something we’ve talked about on a few occasions; many of these games tend to be small and indie, which means they are being developed [...]

Mellifluous Melodies: Top 5 Game Soundtracks

When I think about some of my all-time favourite games, I realise that part of the reason I love them so much is because they feature beautiful, diverse soundtracks. Music is integral to immersive and memorable gameplay experiences, not just as a tool to build ambience, but as a way of physically connecting with a game in a way that transcends language and visuals. It raises the hairs on our arms. It takes our breath away. It empowers us to [...]

Learn to Make Realistic Videogame Props with William Jakespeare

Have you ever thought to yourself, “Man, ya know what would be awesome? If I had a life-size replica of the (instantly recognizable weapon) from (the popular videogame franchise)! But the cosplay ones you can get online are just too damn expensive!” For example, it’s hard to find a decent, full-size replica of the Aperture Science Portal device for anything under $200. And, moments ago, I found a Geth Pulse Rifle from the Mass Effect series going for a whopping [...]

Not so fast: Master Chief Clarifies Halo Comments

Update: When contacted for clarification, Downes stated to IGN that he didn’t intend to imply that he had any knowledge of Halo 2 Anniversary. “What I said was: ‘I think you’re ahead of yourself on H5. I have read some things on line that you can look forward to a H2 anniversary edition maybe this year, but I have no official information one way or the other,’” Downes said. “I was just mentioning some of the things I had read online [...]

Man at Arms Forges Halo’s Energy Sword

Imagine, for a moment, a lighthearted gathering: you and your friends are huddled around a TV playing videogames together. Everyone’s laughing and having a good time. But even the closest of friends can turn on one another, given the right circumstances. Playing Mario Party, for instance. That game has seriously destroyed friendships. But in my friend group, it was Halo 2 that caused the most squabbling. Four of us would be playing when someone would inevitably find the Energy Sword [...]
