Satoru Iwata Gets Touching Tribute at the Game Awards

A moment of silence.

Everyone was shocked to learn that Satoru Iwata, the President of Nintendo, passed away earlier this year. Thousands of condolences and fond reminiscing occurred upon hearing of his passing, and tonight at the Game Awards, Geoff Keighley gave a short moment to honor the man responsible for so many great games over the years.

After a short montage, Reggie Fils-Aime took to the stage to talk about Iwata and his skills of “getting into the particulars of hardware and game design.” Fils-Aime also took time to talk about how fearless Iwata was, highlighting how he was perfectly fine with the name “Wii” and he was “always a champion for an idea he truly believed in.”

Finally, he closed out the tribute saying, “He was my boss, and he was my mentor. But most importantly, he was my friend, and I was more the better for it… Mr. Satoru Iwata wanted Nintendo to be about putting smiles on people’s faces. Mr. Iwata, I hope you’re smiling right now.”
