We all saw the Persona 5 trailer during the Atlus livestream yesterday, and we were all blown away by it. Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the finer details of the trailer and see if we can glean any new information from it.
The Persona 5 trailer starts off with a scenic shot of what looks a lot like Tokyo Bay. That wouldn’t be surprising, really, considering that the debut trailer has already revealed that the game will be set in modern-day Tokyo. I have to say, this setting is rather reminiscent of 2013’s Shin Megami Tensei IV where your samurai protagonists spent most of the game exploring various parts of Tokyo. Of course, the setting in Persona 5 will definitely be a little less dystopian than that of SMT IV’s.
Next up, we catch a quick glimpse of a masked man. I’m assuming that this is the new protagonist (referred to on Tumblr as Chair-kun), though he doesn’t take off his mask to reveal his face. From the trailer alone, it looks like the protagonist will be taking on the role of a ‘masked phantom’, or a thief of some sort.
It’s another interesting twist on the Persona formula because our previous protagonists have all been relatively straight arrows that never went against the law. Taking on the role of a main character who steals from the rich would definitely change up the dynamics in Persona 5.
The trailer also gives us a brief look at the Velvet Room. Looks like Igor’s still around, looking creepy as usual. And hey, it seems like we’re getting twins for our Velvet attendants this time around. Having Velvet twins seems like it could add a little more light-heartedness to the atmosphere of the Velvet Room, so that’ll be a cool thing to look out for when the game does get released.
One thing to note about the game is that its art style looks a lot like Catherine’s, which is definitely a good thing. The in-game graphics give off a really gritty vibe, which I’m sure will help to set the dark tone in Persona 5.
We also got to see some in-game footage where the protagonist traverses the enemy dungeons. In this case, the dungeon looks a lot like a mansion where he and his friends could be planning a heist. Another interesting thing to note here is that we’re no longer attacking shadows like in the past two Persona games. In fact, the enemies here look rather humanoid, taking on the appearances of guards. Or perhaps they really are shadows, and our protagonist has decided to steal from these otherworldly beings. Your guess is as good as mine.
Also worth noting is the fact that there is now platforming in the dungeons. We see the protagonist jumping from one chandelier to the next. Cool stuff.
The battles look way different than they did in previous Persona games as well. The UI has received a massive overhaul and in-game battles look like they’re going to be hectic as hell.
One final thing to note about the trailer is the little clip we see at the end. The protagonist, his face covered in blood, slowly begins to morph into something that doesn’t look human at all. Just before we can witness his entire transformation, the video cuts to the Persona 5 logo and we hear the familiar sound clip of a breaking glass – a sign that a Persona has been summoned.
Now I’m just speculating here, but could it be possible that our main characters will be literally transforming into their Personas in this game? I guess we’ll have to wait for more news from Atlus.
