Mortal Kombat X Tanya and Klassic Pack Review: Are They Worth it?

Tanya has arrived with some goodies.

It’s been almost a month since the last major Mortal Kombat X DLC released. That expansion introduced none other than Jason Voorhees, of Friday the 13th fame, to Mortal Kombat X‘s roster of kombatants, and it did a great job doing so. Also released on that day was the Horror Pack which brought costumes for Reptile, Mileena, and Ermac that were inspired by classic horror movies. NetherRealm studios looks set to have a repeat of greatness with its newest DLCs for their latest fighter: Tanya, along with the Klassic Skins Pack. But, do these stand up to their predecessors?

Taking a quick look at the Klassic Skins Pack, it certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Where the Horror Pack was inspired and unique with interesting themed designs, the Klassic Pack, as the name suggests, brings skins from Mortal Kombat 1 for Kano, Sonya, and Liu Kang. The skins themselves, though nostalgic for Mortal Kombat veterans, lack creativity and are relatively bland. The Klassic skins pale in comparison especially when you look at the Samurai Pack and the Kold War skin packs. Both of those come with truly amazing, jaw-dropping costumes for select fighters, offering content well worth the asking price. Considering that each DLC update so far has come with a free Klassic skin already, the Klassic Pack feels more like a missed opportunity for Mortal Kombat X.

The new playable character Tanya, on the other hand, is absolutely amazing. Adding new combatants to a fighting game isn’t always the easiest thing to do. For starters, they have to fit into the game, which wasn’t an issue here since Tanya is a returning kombatant. One of the biggest issues, though, is balance. The new fighter has to be interesting and somewhat unique, but at the same time cannot be overpowered or somehow have an insane advantage over everyone else. Luckily, there is nothing to worry about here.

Tanya is versatile with her potent long-range attacks, and her ability to close a distance with ease. She is extremely light on her feet, and when you combine that with her teleportation abilities you have a fighter that dances around the screen in a splendid way. She is not the strongest fighter you will come across in Mortal Kombat X, but two of her fighting styles (Dragon Naginata and Pyromancer) provide some strategic options that, when used properly, can give Tanya the edge in battle.

This being the second wave of content for those who hold the Kombat Pack, there was some hope that NetherRealm would shake it up a bit and add a little more to the offerings. Unfortunately it seems as if everything is already set in stone. An amazing character, and three lackluster skins are all that are available this time around, and it is a noticeable step down from last month’s offerings.

If you’re considering picking up any of this content separately, Tanya is a must-have. She is a solid contender, and extremely fun to use. The Klassic Skins Pack isn’t really worth the money unless you’re really into nostalgia. Mortal Kombat X already has amazing looking skin packs on offer that are much more pleasing to the eye. All in all, the new offerings aren’t necessarily bad, they just further prove that so much more can be done and the Kombat Pack is full of missed opportunities.
